 POSITION SUMMARY –
Head Saw Filer We are seeking to fill a supervisory position for a sawmill filing room. This person will supervise the repair and sharpening of band and circular saws at a sawmill in SW Oregon, schedule and prioritize jobs including feedback to internal customers, ensure that craftsmen are operating to planned work schedule and meeting delivery commitments to internal customers, lead continual improvement initiatives, monitor and maintain inventories and supplies, order all material and equipment as required, work within the specified budget by monitoring spending and making sure that they are getting the best possible pricing and service from vendors.
 
Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems, help advance new components and technology into their operations to eliminate problems and drive forward our efforts to implement and maintain 5S throughout our organization.
 
This person will need to have a proven track record of mechanical and machinery trouble-shooting and repair, five years supervisory experience a plus. working knowledge of all saw filing functions, PC operation and experience (Word and Excel Spreadsheets), ability to coach and lead a diverse workforce, purchasing experience preferred, and must be a Champion of Safety.

 
JOB DUTIES
1.         Safety is a priority. Following lockout procedures is mandatory at all times.   Use of personal protective equipment should include eye protection, gloves, hearing protection, and sturdy boots. Practice safe lifting at all times. Keep all guards, shields, and covers in place to protect yourself. Safety is a habit you should practice and encourage your co-workers to do the same.
2.         Maintain a high level of communication with supervisors, machine operators, and maintenance regarding quality issues.
3.         Troubleshoots saw damage, monitors saw changes.
4.         Monitors quality of saws, saw guides, bandsaws, and knives produced in the filing room.
5.         Supervises other filers. Train other filers in all aspects of Sawfiling and Safety.
6.         Researches filing technology.
7.         Inspect, level, tension, and sharpen bandsaws and circle saws.
8.         Side grind bandsaws and circle saws.
9.         Assist in tipping bandsaws and circle saws.
10.       Help with repair of damaged saw teeth by welding or replacing the teeth (oxy/acetylene and TIG welding).
11.       Assist in the process of knife grinding.
12.       Observe saw changes at edgers and bandmills. Report incorrect saw change procedures and mishandling of saws or guides to supervisors. Assist during saw changes as needed. Check wood quality.
13.       Help with cleaning, pouring, and shaving of saw guides.
14.       Understand filing room machine operation, calibration, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair. 
15.       Assist with cleaning of filing room machinery. Sweep filing room as needed.
16.       Have a good working knowledge of how to line up, operate, and repair all edgers and bandmills. Help maintain all lubricants at these work stations. Help with maintenance when needed at these areas.
17.       Attend and participate in daily/weekly management and maintenance meetings.
