Description:

The Plant Manager in Oregon oversees the daily operations of our sawmill. The plant manager is responsible for managing production, optimizing processes, ensuring the safety of staff, and driving continuous improvement within the facility. 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business administration, or Forestry is preferred.
  • 5 years’ minimum in sawmill operations
  • 3 years’ minimum experience in leadership role.
  • Ability to analyze production data and make data-driven decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage large teams in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Experience with equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems is preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Strong understanding of sawmill processes, including milling, drying, and finishing.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all aspects of lumber production, including sawmill operations, milling, drying, and finishing processes.
  • Monitor and improve production efficiency, quality, and resource utilization.
  • Manage the planning, scheduling, and execution of production activities to meet customer demands and ensure on-time delivery.
  • Coordinate the use of machinery, equipment, and labor resources to maximize output and minimize downtime.
  • Foster a positive work environment and promote teamwork, collaboration, and employee engagement.
  • Lead, train, and supervise a team of sawmill operators, maintenance personnel, and support staff.
  • Set clear performance expectations, conduct regular performance evaluations, and implement training programs to enhance employee skills and productivity.
  • Oversee the implementation of safety programs, conduct regular safety meetings, and ensure the safe operation of machinery and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, environmental standards, and company policies.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and identify areas for improvement to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Develop and enforce quality control procedures to minimize defects, improve product consistency, and reduce waste.
  • Monitor the quality of lumber products, ensuring they meet company specifications and industry standards.
  • Troubleshoot quality issues and collaborate with quality control personnel to implement corrective actions as necessary.
  • Monitor and control operational costs, including labor, materials, and maintenance expenses.
  • Identify opportunities for cost reduction and process improvement without compromising product quality.
  • Develop and manage the sawmill’s annual budget, ensuring cost-effective operations and optimal resource allocation.
  • Work closely with the maintenance team to implement preventative maintenance schedules and manage emergency repairs.
  • Oversee the maintenance and repair of sawmill equipment and machinery to ensure optimal performance and reduce downtime.
  • Ensure proper inventory management of spare parts and tools.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance productivity, reduce waste, and improve efficiency.
  • Lead initiatives to modernize equipment and processes to drive innovation and growth.
  • Stay current with industry trends, technological advancements, and best practices in sawmill operations.
  • Work closely with customers to understand their requirements and ensure that product specifications and delivery schedules are met.
  • Resolve any customer complaints or issues related to product quality or delivery in a timely manner.
  • Provide regular performance reports and updates to senior management, including production metrics, safety performance, and financial performance.
