Description:

The Plant Manager at this hardwood sawmill in North Carolina is a key member of the management team and will be a strong team player and willing to wear multiple hats. This position requires a thorough understanding of hardwood sawmill manufacturing, which is essential to overseeing and managing the operations.  They will be responsible for providing overall leadership in the sawmill and will work closely with employees to ensure efficient and effective operations.  The ideal candidate will also have experience as a sawyer, machine operator, and/or maintenance tech.  Reports to General Manager.

Requirements:

  • 3-5 years hardwood sawmill supervision experience. Plant Manager experience preferred.
  • Must have experience from logs through dry kilns including head rigs, debarker, hang saws, saw edger, resaw trimmers, sorters, stackers.
  • Maintenance experience and post-secondary education in wood products or forestry would be considered assets. Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Bachelor of Science degree or Technical Degree is preferred.
  • NHLA trained inspector is preferred
  • Proven ability in leadership, achieving goals and managing safety performance.
  • Past maintenance experience a plus.
  • Strong background in sawmilling techniques, process management and quality control
  • Effective communicator with strong verbal, written and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of performance management and continuous improvement processes
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, problem solving and team building skills.
  • Understanding and knowledge of optimization equipment and processes
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to lead change initiatives.
  • Lean and or 6 Sigma experience preferred.
  • Full P&L experience required.
  • Experience with plant optimization.
  • Experience with maintenance CMMS and work order systems preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Gauge productivity, cost control, recovery, quality and related operational measures to design and implement improvements in execution, capital upgrades and product/market strategies.
  • Ensuring the highest level of workplace safety
  • Optimizing the safety and production performance of the operation
  • Providing direction and support for operating and supervisory personnel while fostering a highly effective working relationship with all employees
  • Providing development for supervisory personnel
  • Driving ongoing continuous improvement opportunities and quality control initiatives
  • Developing cost control programs in conjunction with business plans and managing mill spending
  • Ensuring full compliance with applicable government regulations and corporate policies
