Description:

The Lumber Purchasing Agent in New York is a member of the Executive Leadership Team and the successful candidate will be responsible for the profitable purchase of lumber and related inventory items for a wood products manufacturer in New York state. This individual will work closely with the facilities managers, sales teams, and manufacturing personnel to manage the day-to-day purchasing function with a focus on maintaining a 100% in stock position of inventory items at profitable price levels based on the current forecast of demand. Monitor actual sales volume to the demand adjusting as warranted.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or associate degree from a college or university, preferred.
  • Lumber purchasing experience is a must, preferably for a manufacturing or distribution operation. Knowledge of the hardwood lumber industry in the northeast is preferred.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment; manage competing demands; able to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.
  • Excellent analytical, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be a legal US resident. Unfortunately, there is no visa sponsorship offered for this role.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with NetSuite is an added plus.
  • Sales and trader experience an added plus.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or lift
  • Travel by car or plane as required for success, less than 10% of the time.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit for long periods of time, and communicate

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate with sales, manufacturing and sawmill team members regarding market conditions, supply trends, price trends, and any product opportunities.
  • Coordinate with operations to facilitate an optimal flow of desired raw material through the facility, sourcing the lowest cost for targeted product quality.
  • Demonstrable experience in negotiating prices, terms, and conditions.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with mills and other vendors to perpetuate proper stock levels and cost containment.
  • Enter purchase orders into system, verifying specifications and price.
  • Foster a “best practices” environment with peers from other locations for improved purchasing procedures.
  • Full-time inventory management responsible for purchasing, daily communication with sales, operations, and special orders quote support.
  • Maintain acceptable inventory and competitive cost levels to optimize margin opportunities.
  • Manage multiple priorities, work with a sense of urgency and demonstrate problem solving skills when needed.
  • Verify purchases by comparing items ordered; clarifying shortages/overages and sourcing alternatives as needed.
